Having just awoken, I popped out onto the balcony with my morning coffee: cripes it was cold and accentuated by the ship racing along through a strong north westerly wind towards the Bay of Biscay, ooh err. Naturally, I came back in more than a bit quick. The morning update from the captain suggested that the weather would remain pretty much the same for the rest of day. Actually, that’s not so bad; the Oceana laughs at such weather so we knew we would be in for a comfortable day at sea. Yes that’s right, we have a sea day, when all we will be able to see is sea [again and again].

Yesterday we made our last stop 😦 before heading home to Southampton (boo). That last stop was Lisbon and I awoke just as we were heading up the Tagus (Lisbon’s equivalent to London’s Thames though the Tagus is much bigger) and just coming to pass the Torre de Belem or Belem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries before passing under what must be noisiest bridge on the planet. As you pass under the bridge and look up, it would appear, to me at least, that the road consists of a metal grid so as the traffic drives over the grid there is a constant rumble from the tyres, magnified by the very bridge itself: a passenger plane flew directly overhead as it was coming into land at Lisbon Airport, yet the noise from the bridge drowned out the plane. But the best bit however was watching the funnel of the ship seemingly just fitting under the bridge as we made out way to our berth, or ships parking lot.

On our first visit to Lisbon, the weather was extremely hot and most of the shops were shut so we weren’t that impressed. The second time, we took an excursion to a town called Sintra: a fairy tale town well worth a visit. This time, we decided to take an excursion to a little medieval town some 80 kilometres away called Obidos [one of the seven wonders of Portugal]. Interestingly, the tour literature in our cabin suggests: Sintra; Estoril,;Cascais and Queluz as places to visit but fails to mention Obidos. This is a shame as this quaint medieval town is a most fascinating place to visit. Built on the side of a hill (I know that because Mrs Me made me walk down many steep sloping cobbled streets, which did of course mean I had to come back up the buggers), the town reminds me of a quaint fishing village of Polperro but without the sea, boats or fish.

As freezing as it was, the visit was well worth it. On a personal note, I still prefer Sintra, but Obidos is a good alternative.

On the way back, our tour guide suggested that we visit the supermarket inside the railway station located directly opposite where the ship was parked! Why? because, by all accounts, you could get some really cheap wine of the region and would be ideal for Christmas. Well, Mrs Me wasn’t going to pass up on such a suggestion and off we went. I have to say that to find a supermarket inside a railway station, next to the railway line was rather weird but hey ho and in we went. Very briefly I thought Mrs Me was going to a ‘big shop’ as she started to check the price of such items as chocolate spread, jams, tea, coffee, etc. but fortunately she realised the folly and concentrated on wine, and chocolate Santa’s, and chocolate biscuits, and I know not what else but she was pleased and I knew that we had indeed done well. and so back to the Oceana we went to prepare for our now traditional British Sail Away. This is something we do on every last port of call and it’s absolutely fabulous.

As we all crowded on the sun deck and promenade deck, every passenger is provided with a least one, often many, union jack flags to wave our final port farewell and sing traditional british songs such as We are Sailing, Rule Britannia, My Old Mans a Dustman, I’ll walk 500 Miles!, and of course, God Save the Queen, all at full volume just make sure that everybody knows the Brits have been, but are now leaving.

Having sailed away, we retired to the Yacht & Compass for a fivesey or two (glass of Merlot @ five) before our Peninsular Club Party (for all their loyal cruisers) hosted by the Captain: another chance for Mrs Me to go all dreamy again. Of all the parties we’ve been to, this to be best one yet. For an Italian, the Captain has to be one of best we have had the pleasure to sail under (oh no, Mrs Me has gone even dreamier). This was also a time when he [The Captain] had the opportunity to reward random passengers via a prize draw. Needless to say, we weren’t a winner but the main winer was somebody who so deserved it having sailed with P&O since the 60’s with her husband but unfortunately now cruising alone. She gave a great insight to early day cruising where cabins had only a wash basin with other facilities being located in a central area. I think passengers were also expected to be in bed by a certain time.

After dinner was the crew talent show and auction, in support of the Philippines relief fund. The final total for funds raised on the Oceana will be given towards the end of the cruise but we know the final amount will be significant.

And then it was time for bed ready for a lazy day at sea tomorrow when we can start to think about packing (boo) but not actually doing so. I’m beginning to suspect that the presence of the Captain may need me to prise a dreamy Mrs Me away from the Oceana rather her getting off voluntarily. Clearly, a follow up cruise will be necessary.

Meanwhile, I will once more venture onto the balcony to see the sea, nothing but the sea. The sea is all I will see.

So, the ride down from Hungerford went pretty well having set off only a few minutes after 12:00, my first obstacle was Combe Gibett, when once again my bike realised the term Push Bike. But, after that, it was so much the better as so much of the next fez miles were either down hill or flat.

Being an uneventful, albeit slow ride, we opted to stop at Cheriton for a drink and lunch, but as always,  they had stopped doing food so we had a quick drink and set forth for the Ferry Port. This ti,e, to cut out as many busy roads as possible we opted for the back roads over Ports Down Hill via Pigeon House Lane: by now, i was too hot and bothered and caved in a little bit too quickly and climbed off to push ny bike up the hill. On reflection, it wasn’t that steep and I could probably have nade it, but hey ho, fro, here on in, it was all down hill, pqst the hospital, past the scene of the cat incident, and round the back roads to the Ferry Port.

This when the truth hit us, we had been pooked on as 7 passengers with 6 bicycles all in one camper van. Well, we did it, we placed three bikes on the outside rack then zip tied the others to then so that we had all 6 bikes hanginf oof the back. In all, these 6 bikes were probably worth in excess of 10 grand, but what the heck: We had to get on. We had a few strange looks but we got away with it 🙂

That’s about all I can say about Day 1. So what was I not ready for? The next dqy’s temperature hitting 105° F. More in next Updqte.

Go Podge, Go

So, today is the 1st June. With the WheelsForRotary scheduled for July, the pressure is really on for me to be ready for the event. The question is: Will I be ready?

I really hope so. I really want to prove to those doctors that COPD or no COPD, I can still ride a bike.

Last week was 52 miles: 52 tough miles but I did it. This week, tomorrow, it will be 58’ish miles – I may plan the routes but until I actually ride them, I never know the final distance. Navigational errors (going the wrong way) can cause the overall distance to increase or decrease although experience tends to suggest that an increase is more likely than a decrease.

So, I will be at the Hungerford Library Car Park at 10:00 for a 10:15 depart if anybody wants to tag along. The route can be found here:

Question is, do I ride the Colnago or the De Rosa?

Go Podge, Go.

How could anybody doubt that His Podgeness would not make the ride. He did but not without a couple of false starts as the trilogy of mishaps of the previous Sunday continued into a new Trilogy.

Having spent Saturday sprucing up his beloved Colnago and clearing all excess weight (Swiss Army Knife, scissors, the off multi tool, etc.), all was ready for the Sunday Training Ride. This was to be the biggest ride sol far with a massive from 40 to 50+ miles and so with some trepidation, His Podgeness along with Master Nicholas set off for the Library Car Park. As the rode in they espied Mike Howie (must get a better name for Mr Howie) whose initial greeting was hav you got an allan key? I’ve left mine at home and my saddle is at the wrong height. Master Nicholas was immediately despatched to source said tool to return with much haste. During this time Charles arrived and set up his 23 year old and looking all its age Peugeot mountain bike by which time Mr Howie was all set to go.

Just before the off however, His Podgeness did look down upon the Peugeot Mountain Bike and did decree that perhaps the steed was not really up to the job and suggested that perhaps a road bike, loaned from his own stable, would be more appropriate.

At the allotted time, the ‘famous’ four set off. “Arn’t we going the wrong way?” asked Mr Howie. “Don’t think so” said His Podgeness. Just then, there was a bang and the sound of escaping air emanating from one certain Colnago. With home being only half a mile away, they all set off to ‘Podge’s Towers’ to change the tube and set off again but then a brainwave was had. Why don’t we just change the back wheel altogether (just in case the wheel is at fault). Withe brainwave recognised, the wheel from the De Rosa was inserted into the Colnago and off they set: this time in the direction that Mr Howie believed to be the correct way.  But, the Colnago was slipping its gears and was unrideable and so after half a mile they returned to Podge’s Towers  to reinsert the back wheel back into the Tango and so, on the third attempt, they set off in the original direction which was as it happened the right direction.

After this series of false starts, all went well and although the Tango did occasionally clunk it’s gears, it was adequate for the day. The original intention was to head off through Little Bedwyn and then across to Kintbury, Newbury and then south to Whitchurch. Having lost 45 minutes through false starts though it was decided to just go for a ride and see where the roads went. Well, apart from looping around Newbury via Highclere, the ride went as planned. It was just after Highclere that the back wheel of Master Nicholas Colnago (yes, another Colnago) started to develop a horrid rattle although, while off putting didn’t ‘seem to affect’ the performance. And so, the four continued to a crossroads where Mr Howie said “here my friends, we turn right back on to the original route”. “Oh bother” said His Podgeness, “this takes up Watership”, “Yep” said My Howie, “but then, you did put it in the route Podge”. “Drat” said His Podgeness. And off they set, down then up, and up, and up and up until Hid Podgeness once again revised the ‘Push Bike’. Once at the top however, it was down hill virtually al the way to Whitchurch through some of the most amazing countryside. Then it was time to turn north and head for home towards the dreaded Faccombe Hill. This was where Mr Howie’s gears started to clunk and click whenever he needed to find just one more lower gear (his Podgeness had run out of gears well before 🙂 ). It was then that we realised and recognised the irony. On this ride were three state of the art bicycles made of the latest carbon fibre with the snazziest wheels and best indexed gears on the market and the only bike that was ‘sound as a pound’ was the 23 year old  Peugeot Mountain Bike.

Ando so, with pride just a little dented and newly found respect for the elder of the bike world, they all made their way to Downgate Club Hut for their well earned , now traditional, end of ride drink during which all carbon bikes were hidden, in shame, beneath the only bike that held out though the whole ride. But at least they all made the 52 miles.

Next week, who know but all did agree that the 16th would be the Great Western Sportive to which all would attend. Yeah.

Go Podge, Go

Ok, here it is. The event I’ve been wanting to kick off is to become a reality.

I moved into Hungerford some 9-years ago and have recently developed an almost uncontrollable urge to [do something for the community]. For those that know me, you’ll have already guessed that cycling was going to be central to such an urge. So, following on from the theme of another well know event annual event, I looked for a possible cycle challenge for anybody who wished to [prove that they can] complete the event.

What is the event?

Well, Hungerford is twinned with Liguiel in France, just south of the Loire Valley; so why not cycle there, and back. Better still, why not time the ride so as to coincide with the Hungerford Carnival? So that’s the event / challenge (the carnival bit is still to be confirmed). Hungerford to Liguiel and back. The ride will hopefully comprise of 30 – 40 riders (more if we can manage it) plus 2 – 3 support vehicles (to carry luggage and look after the riders)

The purpose of the ride is [in conjunction with the Hungerford Rotary] to raise as much money as we possibly can for two very worthy causes:

Two very worthy cause which will hopefully encourage lots of interest and support.

When is the event?

The ride will  depart Hungerford on the 7th July 2013 (Sunday) and return on Saturday 13th July, having cycled 550 miles: The proposed itinerary is thus:

Sunday 7th July

Depart Hungerford and cycle (60 miles) to Portsmouth ferry terminal for overnight crossing to Saint-Malo.

Monday 8th July

Depart Saint-Malo and cycle (55 miles) to Rennes.

Tuesday 9th July

Depart Rennes and cycle (86 miles) to Angers.

Wednesday 10th July

Depart angers and cycle (80 miles) to Ligueil.

Thursday 11th July

Depart Ligueil and cycle (80 miles) to Le Mans.

Friday 12th July

Depart Le Mans and cycle (110 miles) to Caen – regrouping at Pegasus Bridge before heading for overnight ferry to Portsmouth.

Saturday 13th July

Depart Portsmouth and cycle (60) miles back to Hungerford for end of ride celebration. If possible, we will try to coincide the home coming with the Hungerford Carnival.

Ride Route 2013

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car, only a high will impress you, and you’ll have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.
