Wow, What a Trip

Posted: September 6, 2010 in Uncategorized

It might have just been a 5-night trip across to France and the Channel Islands but it was a trip worth waiting for and worth doing again. Of course it was made all the better for having positively Canary Island type weather with the temperature over 70f and bright skies throughout: It was a L U V E R L Y Break.

We boarded our ship in Southampton, with Matt and Tara following on behind as a birthday surprise for Debbie before setting sail for Rouen where we spent two days exploring the City and Monet’s Garden.

After Rouen we sailed to St Peter Port in Guernsey and then back to St Mako before heading back to Southampton 😦 feeling extremely well fed and extremely well watered and with an extremely large bar bill (gulp).

Now, I need another one. No that’s not right: I   N_E_E_D   another one.

Today’s The Day

Posted: September 1, 2010 in Uncategorized

Well, here we are: The 31st August. Today is the day. Today is zero sleeps to Cruising. Today is Debbie’s Birthday. Today for me is also the last day of summer.

Through the winter and spring I have always fed the birds. I get great joy an satisfaction sitting at my kitchen table watching the birds feeding on the numerous feeders I put out for them. Birds include Great Tit’s, Blue Tit’s, Green Finch’s, Robin’s and Blackbird’s. Add to these the plethora of sparrow’s (though what sort I haven’t got a clue) and the entertainment value is high. We’ve had woodpeckers of late which is a special joy. All this takes place out the front of the house. At the back, I feed the ducks, and this is where things get a little tricky. You see, you feed the six ducks that happily make home in your garden and they go and tell all their friends and in less than a fortnight, the number had increased to 35+. In addition to these, a family of moorhens settled in as well plus Philip the Cock Pheasant with his gaggle of 6 Philipa the Hen Pheasants. They can get a bit noisy if you don’t feed them in time but as soon as the food arrives all calms down and every bodies happy.

But, then we had a family of Magpies move in; Then we had a family of Jackdaws move: Then we had a family of Crows move in. And by the way, they all fond the food at the front as well that was intended for the Small birds. Still, Spring came and then came Summer and they all disappeared: Don’t know where but they all vanished. And so I vowed to hold back on the feeding in the future.

But today, Debbie’s Birthday, Philip the Cock Pheasant appeared as did 6 Ducks. The ducks hung around outside the kitchen door looking at me as if to say, ‘well, where’s my dinner’. I want to feed them but I don’t want to feed all of the Berkshire Feathered inhabitants again.

In the meantime however, I have Debbie’s Birthday to manage so the birds will have a to wait just a few more days. Anyway, they can eat the apples from the trees while I’m away so I know they wont go hungry. As I said, today is Debbie’s Birthday and part, or most, of her present is a five night cruise To Rouen, St Peter Port and St Malo for Her and myself plus her youngest boy, Master Nicholas. What she doesn’t know, or didn’t know, was that her eldest boy Master Matthew and his Girlfriend Tara were joining us on the boat. Well I can now tell you that her face was a picture this afternoon. We were sitting in a bar on the ship, having finally managed to get her to sit still and have a drink when I managed to time the arrival of Matt and Tara to perfection. Watching Debbie’s face move from curiosity as she ‘people watched’ to confusion, disbelief and then realisation that yes, this was Matt and Tara standing before her and that no they hadn’t forgotten her birthday pressies after all. So this was it: We had reached Debbie’s 49th Birthday and started her 50th Year. All the planning had worked out and she had all her boys with her for her special day. So, with zero days to cruising, I’m off to enjoy my cruise and think about my next cunning plan.

Let’s face it, at the time of writing:

There’s just 115 shopping days to Christmas: As all the stores will soon let us know.

The Day Before The Day

So, today means there is just one more sleep to cruising, yet, more importantly, it is just one more sleep to Debbie’s Birthday when she hits 49 and we all know what that means don’t we? It means that tomorrow is officially the start of Debbie’s 50th year.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to make a fuss over this but it is a very important and sadly overlooked stage in anyones life :-). We always seem to celebrate completing 50 years but never the beginning of that year :-).

Sadly, Debbie’s birthday also heralds the start of the Christmas push. As some may know, I just love Christmas: Actually, that’s not strictly true. What I really enjoy is the run up to Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle. I love all the Christmas Shows: I love all the Christmas Songs: I love the Christmas Carols and yes, even though I may be agnostic, I just love the Religious Services and even though I have never made it, I would love to attend a mid-night mass: Is that wrong of me? I don’t know. Maybe deep down I’m less agnostic than I think. I remember that moment in Lourdes for instance. Anyway…

All the build up for Christmas, the running around in that last week planning, sourcing and preparing everything for the event and yet it nearly always turns out to be a bit of anti climax. Why?

I’ll tell you why. It’s because from the beginning of September, the commercial side of Christmas is forced upon us, first the supermarkets, then the garden centres and sheds. The pubs and restaurants put out their Christmas Menus in July / August (if not sooner) and it’s round about this time of year when the Christmas themed catalogues start to drop through your door. Even now, in August, we have Christmas stores up and running in London! I love it all, I do: I absolutely love it. But why oh why must we have it for three whole months? Why can’t we just have Christmas in December?

Anyway, before all of this, we have Last Night of the Proms, Halloween, Guy Fawkes and Children in Need to enjoy. The last three months of the year has to be, for me, the best three months; even with Christmas playing through the whole period. Better still, it’s my Birthday in November…..

Which brings me back to Tomorrow:
The start of Debbie’s 50th Year:
Just one more sleep to go….

Kites, Rabbits and Moles

With only 2 more sleeps to cruising, today, as with yesterday, I was up before the cows: This time however it was so that I could take Master Nicholas to work (he’s learning to drive now so hopefully, these early starts will be fewer). Early starts do however have their advantages. Being out on the roads in the early hours does mean that one gets to see a wider variety of wildlife: Fox, Stoat, Partridge, Deer (Roe and Muntjac) and on this occasion something I had always hoped to see but never thought I would.

Driving along the A4 between Hungerford and Newbury, we saw the normal collection of birds breakfasting on the previous nights roadkill and as always, these birds seem to time their departure before our arrival with absolute precision. One of the groups of birds however had a somewhat different look about it which I couldn’t quite make out. As we got closer however the Magpies left leaving a Red Kite getting as much as he could for breakfast before it was too late. Seeing this beautiful creature lift off just in front of my car was, for me, a sight to behold. As I drove by, I saw him, or her, in my mirrors circling before dropping back down to continue the interrupted meal.

Seeing this creature confused me. You see, I was of the belief that Red Kites were true birds of prey that relied only on fresh kills made by themselves. If this was the case then why was this one eating roadkill? Is there not enough prey in the area of all the Kites? Are we going to start seeing Red Kites as roadkill themselves? Not a nice thought and one a brushed from my mind.

It turns out however that they are actually opportunists and scavengers although they are of a predatory nature they only take little things like worms through to mice (not exactly eagle like). This did actually upset me a little. You see, we have a couple of Kite’s seemingly checking out the trees around us. The hope is that they settle down and make one these trees their home and start a family of their own. My reasons are purely selfish.

Quite apart from the joy of having such beautiful creatures in your own back yard I do actually have a veritable bird of prey fast food outlet in my very own back garden. Over the past 12 months, a small family of rabbits have moved into, or more accurately, under my back garden. This small family is now, inevitably quit a large family with little sign of any slow down in birth rate. Surely such a bountiful supply of fresh meat would be perfect for the Red Kites. With such a mix of wild life I think I could put up with rabbits in the garden, even though they they eat just about everything I plant, yet curiously, they never eat the weeds.

Maybe, I thought, I could start shooting the Rabbits and leaving them out in the open for the Kites to find, that way I could reduce the Rabbit population and keep the Red Kites hunger sated, but no, this might not be such a good idea. My preferred weapon for shooting Rabbits would be the Air Rifle. The inevitable pellet or pellets left in the rabbit could cause lead poisoning in the Kite. This would not be good for me or the Kite.

So, what does all this mean? Not a lot actually: It means that I had an interesting morning: I saw a Red Kite: The Rabbits will continue as before and the Kites will continue to circle our trees. Hopefully they will settle. I guess that I will just have to leave nature to present to me whatever it will and I shall continue to savour all the good moments. In the meantime however, I have one more problem: Moles.

In addition to the Rabbits, I also have Moles and open warfare has now been declared on them. They are ruining my lawn and beds and leaving the ground underfoot almost dangerous. Well maybe not dangerous but twisting your foot when it falls into one of their runs isn’t funny. So, the mole traps have been sourced and they only remain to be laid in place. Maybe the moles will encourage the Kites: I do hope so. For more on the Red Kite by the way, why not visit the Red Kite Feeding Station @ http://www.gigrin.co.uk

In the mean time however, the Moles have a weeks reprieve as there is now just 2 more sleeps to cruising. Yippee.
