Back to St Maarten today (20th March 2024).

There are in fact four ships in today and, it’s very hot. St Maarten will no doubt be way too busy ( I know the picture suggests not busy) for it to be relaxing. So, there won’t be much exploring today: just as well really, as poor Podge seems to have caught some  sneezing germ making breathing truculent 🥺 – Poor Podge

As previously mentioned, we normally like to walk into town to sit in our favourite bar, the La perle bleu Beach Bar, and have a couple of drinks and maybe a bite to eat. For Podge however, the walk into town today would have been a step too far, as his breathing had deteriorated as a result of picking up a germ from somebody ‘unclean’ (many others did too but with Podge suffering from COPD (Codgers Old Puffing Disease)) such germs take their toll. Poor Podge – Naughty Germs.

Podge and Tubbs have many favourite bars, in both the Caribbean and the Canaries and always try to frequent them all.😋

Even though we had decided not to go for the lengthy walk into town, we did feel (according to Tubbs) up to the walk into the cruise port shopping area. It was a slow walk but the shops were finally reached whereupon Podge espied a nice shiny mug which would be ideal for his morning coffee: Even Tubbs liked the mug so two of them were sourced.

At least it makes a change from fridge magnets 😳

Having sourced the mugs, Podge and Tubbs made their way back to the ship for a well earned rest before getting all dressed up in our dinner suit (Podge) and cocktail dress (Tubbs) for our evening in the Epicurean Restaurant smug in the knowledge that for most of the passengers, the cruise was nearing the end, yet Podge and Tubbs had secured yet another 2-weeks during which the Britannia would sail back to Southampton [so much more relaxing than flying].

As for our dinner, the offerings were wide and varied all of which was so tempting. In the end however, we plumped for:

  • The Alaskan Snow Crab, Langoustine and Salmon Caviar Cocktail
    (Pea and Chervil Custard, Parchment Bread and a Cucumber Mojito) as a starter;
  • The Tronçon of Wild Atlantic Halibut Grenobloise (for two) with Saffron-Poached Fennel and Petit Salad – prepared at our table for our mains;
  • And, the Belgian Chocolate Jaffa Cake with Orange Sauce and Pistachio Ice Cream for desert
  • In addition however, our waiter, who had sussed how much Podge liked his fish and chips(!) also gave us a side order of Giant Indonesian Tiger Prawns, Split and grilled in their shells with Red Chilli and Garlic Butter, Soy Noodles and Stir-Fried Oriental Greens and, a bowl of Thick-Cut Chips to supplement our mains.

It was a struggle, but Podge did manage to consume all that was put in front of him.

By now, all the exertion of the last 2 days, and of course the fine dining, had taken its toll and poor Podge and Tubbs agreed that today, an early night would, again, be a good idea and so we retired to our quarters and, once more, went to bed on the same day we got up.

Step count – 6909 🥴
